Before deer hunters head to the woods, Vestal wants to remind people of the Town's gun law.

Hunters must stay at least 1 thousand feet away from buildings like schools, businesses, farms, houses and churches.

That's a longer distance than the state law, which bans shooting guns within 500 feet of buildings.

The Vestal Police Department says most hunters are aware of the code.

The Town has not had many problems in the past, but police do take the offense seriously.

"With hunting season beginning, we just want to remind people to be aware of that, if you do violate that, police will take action, we could, you could be arrested for a town code violation."

Deer season starts at sunrise tomorrow in New York's Southern Zone.

New York DEC says hunting keeps the deer population in check.

It's also cautions hunters to be safe and always wear orange clothing.

The DEC says hunters who wear orange are 23 times less likely to be killed in a hunting accident.
