An Endwell native is seeking a spot on Capitol Hill.

George Phillips announced his candidacy for U.S. Congress here at Brothers II Restaurant.

Phillips teaches at both Seton Catholic Central High School and Broome Community College.

He's a republican who will challenge Democratic Maurice Hinchey in the 22nd district.

It's a seat Hinchey has held for 15 years.

"It's going to to be challenging to try to unseat an incumbent...that's why we're starting early. I hope we can have a vigorous debate on this issues," says Phillips.

Phillips mentioned Iran and the economy as issues he's concerned with.

Hinchey's office says the Congressman also plans to talk with voters about the issues as he seeks re-election.

Another man, Bruce Layman of Apalachin, also intends to run as a republican for the 22nd district.
