After more than 20 years, a Broome County legislators has announced he will not seek re-election.

Republican Art Shafer has represented the 7th District since 1986.

He was appointed to the position that year.

Then won 12 consecutive elections.

His district has only had 2 other Legislators since 1968.

We talked with Shafer before Thursday night's meeting.

He says it was a tough decision to make.

"I leave with a good feeling. I worked hard. At least I think I did. We had many accomplishments. I just feel good about it and I think that it's time that I step down and we get some new thinking," says Shafer.

Shafer says one of his biggest accomplishments on the Legislature:

Working to get the County's Public Safety Facility built in 1996.

Shafer also looks forward to seeing the completion of renovations at the George Harvey Justice Building.
