A fire damages an old candy factory in Johnson City.

The fire started in this building at the corner of Willow Street and Grand Avenue around 4:00 Wednesday afternoon.

It's the former site of the Fairplay Carmel Factory.

It's now owned by the Battla family.

They tell Action News the building is used as a storage facility for cars.

They say they tried to start a car that had been stored there all winter.

They heard a pop and the engine caught fire.

They tried to put the fire out, but it quickly spread.

That's when the Johnson City fire department arrived on the scene.

"Heavy black smoke, billowing out of the entrance of the side garage there on the side. It was an extremely hot fire," says JC Fire Chief Henry Michalovic.
