By the time firefighters arrived around 5:30 Sunday night, flames had spread through the building.
Cortland Mayor Tom Gallagher says it was built in the 1850's, and had been abandoned since the Wickwire family shut down the business in 1971.
During the fire, the building's facade crumbled into the street, and knocked down a power line.
Power has been restored to surrounding homes and businesses.
Gallagher says the owners planned to tear down the building, and some demolition work had already started.
Fire investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
There are no future plans for the site yet.
But Gallagher says redevelopment of the old Wickwire Factory site is part of the entire South Main Street reconstruction project, set to finish in September of 2006.
