Cleft lip and palate are common birth defects, affecting 1 in every 700 newborns in the United States.
2 year old Cody Luckey of Binghamton was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate.
He has already had three reconstructive surgeries.
His mother, Kelly Luckey, has formed a support group for local families of other children with the birth defect.
She called the group Lucky Smiles.
It was created with the help of the national support organization, Cleft Advocate.
"I have just gained a lot of knowledge about procedures that maybe Cody has yet to go through and just share my past experience. If I'm having a bad day with it, I can just say hey, I need a little bit of support here," said Luckey.
