Tuesday is Michael Janis' second day on the job.
He's served as director of zoos in Ohio, Illinois, and Minnesota.
Janis wants to get a plan in place that includes selecting what kind of animals to bring in, where to put them, and what kind of exhibits to create.
Once there's a plan, Janis says the zoo will begin some fundraising.
"There will be some new exhibits hopefully this spring, some minor ones that will still attract people. We need some new animals up in one of the buildings here. There are several open exhibits that need work," says Janis.
Janis also has experience working with zoo accreditation teams for the American Zoological Association.
The Binghamton zoo lost it's accreditation last year.
Janis is confident the zoo will be re-accreditated.
But, it could take 2 to 3 years.
