"Mary perfectly embodies my pledge to bring a dynamic, collaborative, and entrepreneurial approach to city hall," says Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan.
Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan welcomed the newest member of his staff.
55 year old Binghamton Native Merry Harris will be the cities new Director of Economic development.
Harris has some experience in government.
She served as an assistant to former Broome County Executive Tim Grippen, and in 1992, she was elected to the Broome County Legislature, representing Binghamton's 5th district.
"I'm really thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Matt ryan's Administration especially at a time when I see phenomenal entrepreneurial efforts going on all through the city of Binghamton," says Harris.
Harris says that one of her main priorities as Binghamton's Economic Development Director will be working with area businesses, something she's no stranger to.
Harris worked in management for 10 years at the Harris Tool company and says that's just one experience that makes her qualified for the job.
"The last ten years in manufacturing have been very difficult and I've learned a lot of lessons on what you have to do to survive as a small business in this community," says Harris.
Harris believes building partnerships with city government and Binghamton businesses is the key to successful economic development
"Reconnect with the business community and let them know that city hall is going to be an active partner in building the local economy up and building up our community," says Harris
A plan Harris aims to put into action when she starts this Monday.
Matt Ryan's still needs to appoint a someone to corporation counsel, which is the city's attorney, and a Director of Planning, Housing, and Community Development.
