The Crappie Derby will now take place on Feb. 11 at the Whitney Point Reservoir.
It was originally scheduled for Jan. 28.
But organizers say the ice isn't thick enough now, and won't be by the 28.
The rain this week didn't help.
"The lake has risen 3 to 4 feet over the last 24 hours and that obviously breaks the ice flow from the shore. The lake has to settle back down and heal along the edges such that we have a good, solid safe ice structure," said Crappie Derby Coordinator Dave Hughes.
Hughes says they usually wait until the Monday before the Crappie Derby to determine if the ice is thick enough.
But, when it's postponed, about 2,000 fewer people show up to either fish or watch.
By announcing sooner, Hughes hopes more people can adjust their schedules for Feb. 11.
The purse for this year's Crappie Derby could reach $12,000.
