Interstate 81 New Traffic Pattern

Construction crews are laying the roadwork for a new traffic pattern on I-81 at Whitney Point.

The New York Department of Transportation is reconstructing the bridge at exit 8.

Now, it's preparing to pave the northbound side.

One lane is closed in both directions.

By the end of the week, the northbound lanes will be closed for one mile.

Traffic heading north will shift to a southbound lane with a concrete barrier separating two-way traffic.

"We're doing this to inconvenience as few people as possible, to keep the summer traffic flowing and not impede their progress. That's why we're doing the work in the winter. That's between Labor Day and Memorial Day, to inconvenience as few people as possible," says Dave Hamburg, NYS Department of Transportation.

The project is not expected to be complete until September of 2009.

The work zone speed has been lowered to 55 miles per hour and state police are patrolling the site.
