A former Vestal veterinarian is behind bars for soliciting a minor for sex over the internet.

55-year-old Dr. Timothy Fitzpatrick was sentenced today to one year in jail.

He was also ordered to pay a $2,500 fine.

Fitzpatrick was immediately taken into custody and sent to jail in Fairfax County, Virginia.

A jury found him guilty two months ago.

Fitzpatrick exchanged instant messages online with a detective posing as a 13-year-old girl.

He was arrested more than a year ago in a Fairfax County parking lot where he had arranged to meet the "girl" for sex.

Fitzpatrick had been free on bail, until today.

The prosecutor says with this offense, under Virginia law, Fitzpatrick will not have to register as a sex offender.
