A memorial will be built to honor three Binghamton firefighters who died in a rescue attempt at Rock Bottom Dam 30 years ago.

Binghamton City Council passed a proposal Monday night to build a memorial near the dam on the Susquehanna River, where the city has plans for a new park.

Binghamton Fire Captain Donald McGeever, along with Chief John Cox and Fireman John Russell drowned in September of 1975.

Councilman Chris Papastrat says the monument would cost $3,000 or less.

He says it could be paid for by the city and Binghamton Fire Department Union.
