A police wiretap helps find a murder suspect and bust a drug ring in Tompkins County.

Tompkins County police say 44 year old Curtis Echols, 20 year old Curtis McCool, and 20 year old Darrell Bailey, seen left to right on your screen, are indicted for distributing crack cocaine.

They have temporary residences in Ithaca.

Police say the investigation was at first, unsuccessful.

But a court ordered wire tap in March changed all that.

It led to the arrest of those 3 men and assisted police in bringing charges against Bailey for the murder of 27 year old Wilson Haynes of Ithaca.

Police heard talk on the wire that Bailey shot Haynes four times, twice in the head.

The investigation and wire tap was a collaborative effort between local and state police.

"This is a practice that is used all the time, people care about the result, they don't care about who gets the glory," said District Attorney Gwen Wilkinson.

Police believe the drug ring traveled back and forth from Rochester for over three years.
