Universal Instruments is being sold by its owner, Dover Corporation out of New York City. Universal makes machines that other companies use to make electronics. It's plant at Broome Corporate Park employs 600 people. The company can't reveal potential buyers, but it says one interested company shares the same vision as Universal.
"It appears that the situation will be much more conducive for our growth plans in the future and more conducive with the market in which Universal does business, which is high technology electronic assembly equipment," said James Silkworth of Universal Instruments.
Universal adds it doesn't anticipate any job loss or significant changes for employees. Besides the local workforce, it employs 500 people in China. Dover Corporation says its selling Universal and seven other companies because of a strategic change in its investments.
