New York State Police have a couple in custody, accused in a deadly shooting during an attempt to steal prescription drugs.

One woman was killed, and two others were critically injured.

It started with a home invasion at 503 Kent Street in the Town Windsor.

Action News reporter Erik Burling tells us how it ended in a shoot-out.

Crime Scene Investigators canvas the home and property of Ethan Button on Kent Street in the Town of Windsor.

State Police say around 9:50 Tuesday night Button called 9-1-1 reporting gun shots.

Investigators say 21 year-old Anthony Carnevale and his wife, 20 year-old Ashley Carnevale, broke into the house searching for prescription drugs.

Anthony Carnevale was carrying a handgun.

"There was an altercation at the residence and Carnevale shot Ethan Button who resides at that location. Carnevale then also shot Mrs. Jean Clark," said Lt. James Barnes, New York State Police.

Clark, a 39 year-old Pennsylvania woman was staying at the home, and found dead when authorities arrived.

An autopsy revealed she died from gunshot wounds to the head and chest.

Troopers say a total of 6 rounds were fired throughout the house.

Button was shot in the back.

He then fired and injured Anthony Carnevale.

"The weapon was wrestled away from him by Mr. Button," said Lt. Barnes.

Both men were taken from the house to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City.

Before investigators arrived, Ashley Carnevale fled the scene

She was arrested at her home on Gorman Road in Kirkwood, and charged with 2nd degree murder.

Friends of the couple are in disbelief.

"It was very traumatic you know, just to hear about it. We were really close to those guys," said Steven Fish of Windsor.

"The talk of the town is drugs. And drugs do change a lot of people."

State Police say both Ashley and Anthony Carnevale had prior run-ins with the law.

Ashley Carnevale was arraigned in the Town of Windsor Court.

She is currently in Broome County Jail Without Bail.

State Police say a 2nd degree murder charge is pending against Anthony Carnavale.

He is in custody and in critical condition at Wilson Hospital, where Ethan Button is listed in fair condition.
