Dog Rescue Utilized Training

Binghamton firefighters put recent rescue training in use to save a pooch.

The owner of Suki was extremely grateful to city firefighters and police.

Kate Hefford called 911 when her dog got stuck in the river off Laurel Avenue this morning.

Firefighters say Suki ran after a flock of ducks.

She got stuck on ice that was breaking up.

Firefighter Paul Yannuzzi and two others put on ice rescue suits and hooked Yannuzzi up to a line and ladder.

"So I just slid across the ice, grabbed the dog and he was able to get out with my help and we just slipped back into shore," said Yannuzzi.

Yannuzzi is one of a group of Binghamton firefighters who attended ice rescue training at the State Fire Academy in Montour Falls last month.

He shared skills with others on his shift just this past Sunday.

That training certainly helped Thursday.

Suki is a 14 year old lab spaniel mix and she's doing fine.
