The Binghamton area has lost more than 3 thousand private jobs over the past year.
New York released labor numbers showing deep job loss between May 2008 and May 2009.
The unemployment rate in the Binghamton Metropolitan area, which includes Broome and Tioga counties, rose to 7.9% in May.
Unemployment was 7.6% in April.
In May of 2008, the jobless rate was at 5.1%
Since that the number of private sector jobs fell by 3.4% or 3,100 jobs.
The local manufacturing industry has shed 1,000 jobs.
Services are down 1,700 positions.
The State Labor Department says New York's unemployment is at the highest rate in 16 years.
