Two people are injured after a serious accident on Interstate 81.

The vehicle was driven by 72-year-old Bernard Abrams of New Jersey.

He was driving south on I-81 with his wife Sheila.

Police say Abrams fell asleep at the wheel.

That's when he crossed over into the north lane, hitting one side of the bridge.

Police say his car went back and forth across the north lane 3 times before it finally came to rest.

The car caught fire and a passerby extinguished it.

Fire crews extracted Abrams and his wife from the car and took them to Wilson Hospital.

A nursing supervisor couldn't provide their conditions, but police say their injuries don't appear to be life-threatening.

Police also say luckily no one else was hurt.

I-81 was closed for about an hour after the accident.
