School just let out for Margaretville seniors Jason Gray and Cassie Merwin.
They were walking to this Country Store.
Nothing seemed unusual when they saw a trooper questioning a person outside the gas station.
When they got closer, another vehicle blocked their view.
"The milk truck cut our view off and we heard the gun and two and two seconds later the cop ran in front,: says Gray.
"The cop came around the truck, with his gun drawn and almost ran into us, both of us were pretty freaked out. He's yelling I'm shot I'm shot," says Merwin.
Trooper Matthew Gombosi was hit in his vest.
He managed to run and get a look at the suspect's van, which sped away from the gas station.
Jason and Cassie went to see if Gombosi was injured.
"I'm a first responder, so I followed the cop to see if he was okay. He ran down the street a little bit and tried to cut the van off," says Merwin.
"We saw that he was just shot in his vest and he walked backed over and he called for backup," says Gray.
The two students were stunned, but they didn't think twice about rushing in to help.
"I didn't really think about there being guns around, just trying to help, that's what I'm trained to do. But things like this just don't happen in Margaretville," says Merwin.
Now Jason, Cassie and the whole town are just waiting to see what happens next.
Margaretville Schools closed Wednesday.
Police say Trooper Gombosi stopped the suspect for a traffic violation.
He was shot one time with a small handgun, and was hit in his bulletproof vest.
