Some New Yorkers are calling on the state to raise minimum wage and unemployment benefits.
The Hunger Action Network wants the state minimum wage increased from $7.15 to $10 an hour.
Under state law, the Commissioner of Labor has the power to raise the minimum wage without legislative approval.
The commission is also required to review the minimum wage when at least 50 low-income workers submit a petition.
Hunger Action says it will submit one if the commissioner doesn't act.
The organization also wants the state to provide jobs for the unemployed if the private sector fails to put people back to work.
