Last-Minute Shoppers Find Deals

Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) - Time is running out to finish your Christmas shopping, and people hit the malls hard today to find that perfect gift to put under the tree.

Action News Reporter Natalie Jenereski tells us if the last-minute sales brought in big crowds.

"Just trying to find the best sales, just like everyone else during the recession," said Niki Bush of Conklin.

Thousands of last-minute holiday shoppers shared the same idea at the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City this weekend.

A Consumer Reports survey found that shoppers are looking for bargains, and for more practical gifts this year.

"I just got three pieces of clothing at a store for $15 dollars and I was very excited," said Sara DeFrancesco of the Town of Maine.

The same excitement didn't come over some other mall-goers who were trying to find more specific gifts.

"One more thing, and we can't find it," said Agnes Gowin of Stevensville, PA.

Which is why the same survey warned consumers that some items may be out of stock due to retailers cutting back during the recession.

The weekend before Christmas is still always one of the busiest for retailers.

"There are a lot of people, but they're not rude or anything like that. People are very nice in Binghamton," said Paula Prentice of Binghamton.

"It's a lot less crowded than I expected today. There are empty parking spaces, there were no lines. It's not like Christmas shopping," said DeFrancesco.

Not only were crowds thin and parking spaces easy to find, but last-minute shoppers also noticed something else was missing too.

"It's not as decorated as I've noticed it in the past, and there's no Christmas music pumping through the loudspeakers. It's kind of low-key, it just seems like any other day at the mall," said DeFrancesco.

"I think it does take away, but that's what family I guess is for," said Bush.

There's nothing like the perfect present to put under the tree, just in time.

The Oakdale mall has extended holiday hours this week.

It's open from 7:00 a.m. through 11 p.m., Monday through Wednesday.

It closes at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve, and is closed on Christmas.
