On December 12, 2006, Leonard "Sonny" Howell was arrested after a federal search warrant was executed at his residence at 1029 Old Route 7, Port Crane, in connection with a large scale methamphetamine investigation named "Operation Crystal Apple".
Howell is charged with being involved in a conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and with unlawful possession of a firearm as a convicted felon. The trial in this case began on June 18, 2007, in U.S. District Court.
Closing remarks are expected this morning and jury deliberations are expected to take place this afternoon. Leonard "Sonny" Howell faces a possible maximum penalty of life in prison.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Thomas P. Walsh.
