Tops Friendly Markets will buy Penn Traffic's 79 supermarkets in the Northeast.

Syracuse, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Tops Friendly Markets says it will buy Penn Traffic's 79 supermarkets in the Northeast.

Penn Traffic, based in Syracuse, operates P&C, Quality Markets and BiLo stores in New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont and New Hampshire.

It employs more than 57 hundred people.

Tops is based in suburban Buffalo.

Terms of the deal were not released.

The U.S. bankruptcy court must still approve the sale.
