Kirkwood, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The warmer temperatures means more crews are on the road for construction season, and drivers are urged to be careful in work zones.
It's "Work Zone Awareness" week in New York.
Last year alone, the state's Department of Transportation saw more than 500 traffic crashes in work zones.
The DOT is working with State Police to get the word out about safe driving.
It says if drivers would just slow down and be alert, they could save not only their lives, but also the lives of others working on the road.
"It's even important for a situation like this for people to be paying attention because what wasn't here yesterday is here today and people need to pay attention so they can drive through the work zone safely," says Jack Williams, Regional Director of NYSDOT Region 9.
Drivers who fail to obey work zone speed limits can face doubled fines.
