Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The observance of Memorial Day comes with special meaning for people in Johnson City.

Bands, boy scouts, and area veterans' groups were marching down Main Street this morning.

There was also a moment of silence, a gun-shot salute to all fallen soldiers, and a playing of taps.

Local veterans say Memorial Day gives them a chance to say thank-you to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the good of the country.

"you honor all the veterans who served, lost their life, served out country. Remember them." said Jim Hickey

"It means we have to commemorate and honor all that our military that served. They've got a tough time now." said Joe Lukasik

The Memorial Day ceremony was held outside the Frank Johnson American Legion on Main Street.
