Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Extraordinary actions by ordinary people are recognized by the American Red Cross.
The Southern Tier Chapter held its first ever Heroes Breakfast this morning at the Holiday Inn Arena in Downtown Binghamton.
The Hero Campaign honors the actions of people who would otherwise go unnoticed.
12 year-old Elizabeth Canniff received the Youth Good Samaritan Award.
In April 2009, she was in a van with her mother on I-81 when her mother became unconscious.
"All of the sudden I'm just looking at the window and I see the car going over to the guard rail, and so I look over and see my mom unconscious, and all of the sudden I take hold of the wheel." said Elizabeth Canniff
Elizabeth took hold of the wheel and guided it, until a passerby could help her bring the van to a complete stop.
Her mother is now healthy.
Several other honorees were recognized as community heroes.
WBNG's General Manager Greg Catlin served as the Master of Ceremonies.
