The Hogwarts School for the Performing Arts will present A Very Potter Musical this weekend, July 6th, 7th, and 8th. The hilarious parody of the beloved Harry Potter series was originally written by students at the University of Michigan, and a YouTube video of their original production has received over nine million views. This is only the second time the show has been performed in the Binghamton area. The first production, also a Hogwarts School venture, sold out two nights of performances back in January. This special reunion production features musical and stage direction by Greg Santa Croce, choreography by Megan Santa Croce, lighting and sound design by Fully Involved Entertainment, and much of the same cast as the January shows.

“It really is one of the best parodies I have ever come across,” says co-producer Brian Ives. “The show lives up to its motto of ‘totally awesome.’” Pitting Harry and his familiar group of friends against Lord Voldemort, the show takes the famous book series and turns it on its head. Important plot points are skewed across several novels, characters have their life ambitions knocked astray, and entire new subplots are introduced. But it is all done in such a loving way, says co-producer Jana Kucera, who also plays Hermione in the production, that it makes for a hilarious, cohesive alternate story to JK Rowling’s books.

The Hogwarts School for the Performing Arts is a theatre troupe made up of local high schoolers, college students – and a few adults. “We try to create a really nice, family atmosphere in the company,” says Ives, “even if the material we’re working with is somewhat adult in nature.” Cast members frequently bring desserts to rehearsals, adds Kucera, with fits of laughter a common occurrence. “We want to convey this great, fun feeling we’ve got within the company to our audiences,” says Ives.

The cast of A Very Potter Musical has performed in a combined total of over one-hundred productions, and have been seen for years in their high school shows, as well as on the stages of such local companies as the Cider Mill Playhouse, the Endicott Performing Arts Center, and the Summer Savoyards. Several of the cast have even performed with the Tri-Cities Opera.

A Very Potter Musical will be presented this Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 PM, and this Sunday at 2:30 PM. All performances will be held in main gym of the Monsignor Phelan Center on the campus of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Hillcrest, NY – and are expected to be just as “totally awesome” as this past January’s showings.
