Training to Beat Cancer

BINGHAMTON, NY – Laurie-Ann Platt, a resident of Conklin, NY, announced today that she will be hosting a fundraiser benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on Sunday, August 19, 2012 from 12:00 pm to 6:00 at Gallagher’s Irish Pub located at 92 Robinson Street in Binghamton, New York. The cost to attend the fundraiser is $15 in advance and $20 at the door, which includes chicken spiedies, pulled pork, tossed salad and salt potatoes, a free can koozie for the first 200 tickets sold and love music by the band The Troubadours. In addition, there will be raffles, 50/50 and other fun activities. All proceeds from the event will go directly to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Platt also announces that she will be RUN/WALKING in the Walt Disney World Marathon on January 12, 2013 in memory of her mother and in honor of so many. Platt has been approached by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Western & Central New York Chapter to join their Team In Training, which the society sponsors.

Team In Training (TNT), The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) leading endurance sports charity training program, has reached a remarkable milestone of raising over $1 billon to support blood cancer research and patient services. Since its inception in 1988, when a team of 38 runners trained together for the New York City Marathon and raised $320,000, TNT has prepared more than 440,000 people—approximately 40,000 participants annually— to achieve their dream of completing a marathon, half marathon, triathlon, 100-mile (century) bicycle ride or hike adventure. The enormous success of this program has helped make possible advances in blood cancer therapies and treatments that have prolonged and enhanced the lives of hundreds of thousands of patients.

Nancy Hails, Executive Director of the local Leukemia & Lymphoma chapter, said, “The Team In Training program is expected to raise approximately $500,000 this year in the Western & Central New York area to support blood cancer research and patient aid and services.”

Platt says, “I have been on a mission for a few years now (since 2005); doing what I can to eradicate blood cancers. Since it has not done yet… I am going to keep going and this year I am kicking it up! I have a goal to raise the most money yet and I will be training for the FULL marathon in Walt Disney World on January 13, 2013. You read right… I said Full marathon, 26.2 miles. I can hardly believe it myself.“ She has already completed six half marathons with TNT. She is one that can not wait for the next event to come about, she loves TNT and it has made her a better person.

“The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is committed to finding a cure for the disease and related cancers while improving the quality of life of our patients and their families,” Hails said. “This signature campaign will play a major role in helping us reach our goal. People come back after they have completed the program once and they can’t wait to do it again. Our participants really enjoy the program and are dedicated to our mission”

Fundraising is a big part of the Team In Training program. When the fundraising goal is met, the participant will travel to Orlando, FL with all arrangements made by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to compete in the WDW Marathon. Platt explains that she is committed to rising$5,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in memory of her mom, Barbara Platt, who passed away in 1988 from blood cancers.
