Young driver getting start in NY racing, gets support from Nascar's Joey Coulter
Young Derek Northrup, who's father Jerry Northrup was a top Dirt Modified driver until back issues sidelined his career, will begin racing Microds this year at age 11. On top of the excitement of beginning, he will be getting support and experience from Nascar Camping World Truck series driver Joey Coulter through his Coulter Driver Development program.
Derek will drive a Microd, that is dedicated to long time NY Dirt Modified driver Pete Cordes of Sidney Center, that will be numbered 68 and will carry the familiar blue paint job that Pete ran for years. Pete was a great role model to Derek's father Jerry and his uncle Rick Bristol who is sponsoring the effort and is partners with Joey Coulter in a charity foundation for terminally ill children and several charity events.
" I am excited that we can put together a tribute car to Pete, he was a great person to me when I was growing up, he allowed me to ride to the races each Saturday night with he and his family. Then later when we moved to Masonville his father would bring me to Five Mile Point to watch him race. He is someone that I have remembered and looked up to for many years. To have Pete able to take a photo with Derek and see what we have done will be very cool. I am also excited to have my friend Joey Coulter help to do this program for Derek and to support the track where they race with a billboard and sponsoring a night June 7th where I will fly up from Florida and have Joey via speaker phone to talk to the young racers that night" stated Bristol.
" I am excited to see the beginning of a young racers career, and to be able to be a part with Rick. Rick has told me much about Pete Cordes and how much he meant to him, I would love to meet him if it can ever work out. I look forward to sponsoring, and helping Derek get started and to sponsor at the track so that the young racers can chase the same dream I had when I was their age. To make it to Nascar has been so rewarding and I would love to see and help others reach the same dream." expressed Coulter.
Derek's #68 Microd will be sponsored by C.A.R.S. Racing for a Cause Inc. , Orlando FL., Coulter Driver Development, Charlotte NC, Big Top Icecream, Sidney NY and All American Builders, Sidney NY and Timeless Threads.
