Dave Barvinchak Named Educator Of The Week

By Jessica Light

This week's Educator of the Week is a 5th grade teacher at Johnson City Intermediate.

After we found out that students flocked to this educator, we wanted to see exactly how Mr. Dave Barvinchak engaged his students.

Take a look for yourself.

"When we experiment with something we say 'Oh I'm just trying to experiment."

Mr. Dave Barvinchak is experimenting with fun.

He teaches 5th graders here at Johnson City Intermediate School.

Today his students have a minute to help each other learn a definition.

But even after the timer runs out, the energy never does.

"I know what kind of teachers bored me to death so I don't want to be that teacher. So I want to be, I want them to want to walk in that door and want to just see smiles on their faces," says Barvinchak.

And his plan is working, the kids are smiling and raving about Mr. Barvinchak.

"He'll be like laughing and he'll be like, he'll be like 'Ok class, let's do this," says Jillian Craig of Johnson City Intermediate.

"He makes learning very fun, like every single day he'll like joke around and he's just a very funny teacher," says Tanya Shelestovsky of Johnson City Intermediate.

Mr. Barvinchak says he has one goal, to make these kids laugh as much as possible.

"Anything I can do to be fun, or tell stories and jokes and get them engaged in learning makes them want to walk in the door," says Barvinchak.

"Need another brave volunteer...life science!"

And these kids look like they're loving learning.

And loving their teacher.

That's why Mr. Dave Barvinchak is our pick for educator of the week.
