Educator Of The Week: Lindsay McCandless

By Jessica Light

This week we head to Greene High School to visit a teacher who really tries to be a friend to her student...

Ms. Lindsay McCandless is our Educator of the Week.

At the beginning of the year, Zachary Urda was a shy kind of guy.

But that's all changed, thanks to his English teacher, Ms McCandless.

"I was just so nervous and she made me laugh on the first day. I was just saying to myself yeah she's going to be a good teacher this year," says Urda.

But there's more behind his nomination.

Ms. McCandless keeps the classroom on its toes with her quirky personality.

"You have to keep their attention for 40 minutes and with 9th and 10th graders their minds are off and wandering onto various other things that are going on in their lives," says Ms. Lindsay McCandless.

So she uses nicknames.

One of them Buttercup, another T-Bone.

Zach is Ricky Bobby because he likes racing.

Ms. McCandless says the nicknames help her students feel more connected to her.

They've even given her a nickname... Jive Turkey.

"She's like more of a friend, more of a buddy like then a teacher but she still helps you learn the material too," says Josh Clink of Greene High School.

She says she has two jobs in the classroom.

A teacher and an entertainer.

"If I have to embarrass myself and act like a fool in front of them then I'll do that," says McCandless.

"Do you think English is your favorite class now because of her?" asks Jessica.

"Mmmhmm. Honestly? Definitely yeah. Well Actually no.. But.."says Urda.

Well he might not love English but Zach loves his teacher.

That's why she's our Educator of the Week.
