Educator Of Week: Mr. Steve Hamlin

Educator Of Week: Mr. Steve Hamlin

By Jessica Light

For our Educator of the Week we head to Endicott.

Jennie F Snapp Middle School has a 6th grade social studies and science teacher who uses fun projects to teach basic lessons.

Mr. Steve Hamlin makes things interesting for his 6th graders...

"Whenever he starts a new lesson theres always like he always does like projects with it," says Marisa Gasbarra.

In today's science class these colored cut outs explain earthquakes.

"They're learning about different forms of faults that run through parts of the world and they're making models in there to demonstrate how faults will slip and slide," says Hamlin.

Another project helps these kids understand the harsh reality of social class.

"Hamarabi treated like the higher class like he let them get away with things and he'd reward them and like for us like the higher class we got candy and stuff and homework passes and the lower class if they were late they got kicked out and they had to write an essay," says Morgan Lanza.

Morgan says those real life lessons are why she nominated Mr. Hamlin for Educator of the Week.

But its not all work and no play for these guys.

Mr. Hamlin does something that the kids say no other teacher does...

"We get Friday Fun and he lets us play games and go outside and not learn.. Take a day off," says Lanza.

But today is Tuesday.

That means these kids are hard at work and Mr Hamlin is right along side of them, making sure they understand the project.

"You just want to make sure each student understands what your doing. You do the best to meet the needs of each kid," says Hamlin.

Fun projects and a few Fridays off now and then...

Mr Steve Hamlin is our Educator of the Week.
