Educator of the Week 4/1/08

By WBNG News

There's nothing better then an energetic teacher.
One who gets the class involved and even jokes around about the day's lesson.
We found one such teacher out in Davenport.
Action News Reporter Jessica Light introduces us to Our Educator of the Week.

Mr. Nevin Henderson teaches earth science at Davenport high school.
His students say he's a fun, energetic teacher that makes things like rocks and weather maps interesting.

"We don't just sit, like any teacher can make us sit down and take notes but he actually does a lot more, he helps us get into it."

Mr. Henderson says that energy actually works both ways.
"I think they energize you in a sense I feed off their energy and if they know, if I see they're excited or they're excited they feed off that and they get excited as well. I told my wife, she in fact said to me, its the one job that I love to get up for and come to work."

And it shows.
The students who nominated their teacher wrote about his passion for the job.
Jessica Green says he sparked her interested in a science related career.

"I wasn't really a science person but now I am, I love science."

"When one student like Jessica says to me, you know mr henderson I am thinking about going into science. It looks like it could be a lot of fun and something I can do. Thats where I've made a difference in someone's life."

And Jessica's not the only one.
Many of these kids say in the past they weren't exactly rushing to take their seat in science class.
But Mr. Henderson changed that.

" I think any teacher that can make someone interesting in something that's not really their specialty, should be noticed."
Noticed, as our educator of the week.
