Today we meet a special education teacher at Binghamton High School that's become somewhat of a second mother to her students.
Meet Miss Tia Peters, our Educator of the Week.
"what is a perfect square? What numbers can we use..."
Miss Tia Peters helps these high school students understand what they learn in class.
She's a special educator teacher at Binghamton High School.
She says "If I'm always designing new activities, if I'm always trying new things with them that maybe that frustration level will go down, because one day I'm hoping I'll find out their particular learning style."
Miss Peters says everyone learns different, so her methods are constantly changing.
"but what do we put here? What are we missing?"
Her students say that technique helps them grasp ideas that they may have struggled with... Or more likely, never paid attention to.
Thats why Julia Winger nominated her teacher to be our Educator of the week.
Winger says "it could be the most boring in class but she'll just make it so good. All she has to do is laugh and she just makes everything so good."
Today these kids are teaching each other different math concepts.
And after their done with a quick presentation.... A high 5 for their efforts.
Miss Peters says "they need all the positive reinforcement they can get and that helps with the frustration level. They, if they can feel like their cared for, if they're an asset to the community then they're more willing to put forth more effort."
"perfect, Perfect, excellent."
And that positive reinforcement goes a long way for these students.
Julia Winger says "To me, she's like another mother to me because she's very sweet and that's... she's a very good teacher."
