Teaching health class to a bunch of 7th and 8th graders.

It's something one teacher at West Binghamton Middle School has looked forward to every day for the last 16 years.

Here's our Educator of the Week.

Meet Maria Evan.

She teaches health to 7th and 8th graders here at West Binghamton Middle school and she loves every minute of it.

She says she drives to work every morning excited to teach another class.

"I don't think its so much what I do, its what the kids do," says Evan.

"I ask the questions. I give them the questions and they give me the answers," says Evan.

But her students say some of those questions, are silly questions which makes giving the answers a little easier.

"She makes the whole class interesting and she gets everybody to participate in it," says Eric King of West Binghamton Middle School.

Plus she plays games and most importantly ... She's nice.

"She never yells like as soon as she says something everybody listens to her and everybody sits down. She brings fruit and snacks to class so everybody loves her," says Maizy Jachimowicz of West Binghamton Middle School.

Mrs. Evan says it might sound selfish but she thinks Health class is the most important subject.

"It impacts everything you do in life, everything. In fact I tell the kids I said you can take health and you can put it into social studies, we do math, we do science, we do english," says Evan.

She hopes her daily lessons will impact her students day to day lives for years to come.

"My biggest goal is for them to learn to take responsibility for themselves. For them to be able to make the right choices, make the right decisions, to be able to evaluate situations that they're in," says Evan.

And with 16 years of teaching under her belt its easy to see why Mrs. Maria Evan is this week's Educator of the Week.
