New York Harvest Kids Week

New York Harvest Kids Week

By Jessica Light

Last week some local schools had a healthy treat in the lunch line.

A different fruit or vegetable each day thanks to the New York Harvest New York Kids week.

And it was sponsored by the Steps to a healthier New York program.

Who says kids hate food that's good for them.

'I love Apples," says Jack Rodgers of Endicott.

This 1st grader at the George F. Johnson School in Endicott loves every combination of apples he can think of."

"Apple Cider, candy apples, apples cut up, apples plain," says Jack.

But maybe your little one doesn't go bananas for fruits and veggies.

Now's the time to try and change that.

The younger the kid, the better the chance to shape their eating habits.

"If we can get proper eating at a very young age, we're more likely to have them eat properly throughout their entire life and obviously be a healthy individual," says Union Endicott Director of Dining Services Gordon McCluskie.

That's one of the ideas behind last week's New York Harvest New York Kids week.

Participating schools served a different locally grown fruit or veggie each day thanks to the Steps to a Healthier New York program.

Not only teaching healthy eating, but supporting area farmers as well.

"We try to use as much New York produce and products as we can but this is the first year we've had a specific week where we've done that," says McCluskie.

But McCluskie says his school's lunch program has been involved in the Give Me 5 program for years now.

Encouraging kids to eat 5 or more fruits and veggies a day.

And the school even has it's own garden to teach about healthy foods.

Maybe that's why Jack likes his apples so much.

"Cause without them you can die, without the good things in them," says Jack.

Well you might not die without them Jack, but like the old saying goes...

An apple a day does keep the doctor away.
