Mentor Helps Disabled Live Actively

Mentor Helps Disabled Live Actively

By Jessica Light

It can be hard for someone with a disability to live an active lifestyle.

But with the help of a mentor, it's possible.

That's this week's Steps to a Healthier New York.

Candie Stiles is legally blind, but she's not letting that keep her from living a normal lifestyle.

She's a client of the Faith in Action program through Broome County Council of Churches.

But today she's working one-on-one with someone from the Healthy Lifestyles Mentor Program.

Learning how to choose healthier meal options.

Candie says it's all about living as long as she can.

"I work with children who have disabilities and I want to be able to keep doing that for my entire life and just to keep going strong. So I think I'm young and if I keep eating healthy now then I can continue doing what I'm doing for a long time," says Stiles.

Steps to a Healthier New York helped to inspire the program through Faith in Action.

Mentors also work with people to lose weight, stay active, control their diabetes...even quit smoking.

Candie's mentor, Samantha, coordinates the entire program.

"I have seen, especially around here, a need for a program like this. People who are homebound, who can't get to nutrition centers of nutrition classes, can't get out, have no transportation. The fact that we can go to them and sit with them and help them is extremely rewarding," says Samantha Schatz.

Candie is learning how to work all 5 food groups into her meals.

And even though she needs help going grocery shopping now, Samantha hopes that someday, Candie will be able to do it all by herself.

"I wanna live like everyone else because I have the same goals and dreams that everybody else has. I like getting out places and being active and doing a lot in my community and I don't want anything to hinder that," says Stiles.
