Students Walk To Stay Fit

By Jessica Light

Kids at Chenango Bridge Elementary get a chance to exercise everyday.

They can join a club that encourages the kids to walk during recess.

That's this week's Steps to a healthier New York.

Recess.

It's usually a time for kids to kick back and play...

But for these guys... It's a time for exercise.

"In playground you're playing games but in walking you can be talking and you get get it all out like if you want to talk in the classroom you'll get in trouble," says 4th grader Mark Gallo.

Mark, along with about 50 other 4th, 5th and 6th graders at Chenango Bridge Elementary are in the Mileage Club.

Instead of an ordinary recess... They walk.

For every lap around the field ... They get a stamp on their Mileage club card.

"Its a choice they get, we explain it to them and take the initiative to come in, get the card after they complete them," says Physical Education Teacher Scott Klein.

And when that card fills up with stamps... They get a reward.

The club started 3 years ago as part of a grant from Steps to a Healthier New York.

"It's on the forefront... Child obesity and we're trying to do things to encourage fitness and get kids active and this is just one way to get them to understand they can be active just walking," says Klein.

And getting them active at a young age can help them stay active their entire lives.

Mark certainly understands...

"You don't want to just be sitting at home watching tv and eating potato chips! You want to get active and be going around," says Gallo.

Recess takes on a whole new meaning...
