Diabetes Awareness

By Jessica Light

This month is National Diabetes Awareness month.

Here's your chance to learn a thing or two about how people live with diabetes each day.

It's this week's Steps to A Healthier New York.

Living with Diabetes.

It's not easy but thanks to advances in technology it has gotten easier.

William Smith knows firsthand.

"Diabetes is not a death sentence. It's something you can live with," says Smith.

He came here to the Binghamton Regency for a Community Diabetes Forum.

It's sponsored by the American Diabetes Association, Lourdes, UHS and the Steps to a Healthier New York program.

Because November is Diabetes Awareness Month.

"We focus more in on the patient that actually has the disease and so we are trying to teach them how to best manage it and that's one of the reasons we're doing this program tonight," says Sylvia Hough of American Diabetes Association.

But it's not just for the patient.

The lessons these speakers are sharing can help the family of a diabetic, or someone with a family history of diabetes.

And after the speaker, a panel discussion where people can ask their questions.

But the forum is also a chance for vendors to showcase the newest products on the market.

While researchers work to find a cure, these gadgets can help diabetics live a healthy lifestyle.

William says he's learned to live each day everyday, regardless of his disease.

"You can live with it too. Manage it. Prevent it. If you have pre-diabetes do everything you can to forestall full-blown diabetes," says Smith.
