Homer Brink Elementary Wellness Program

Some of the teachers and staff at one local elementary made a commitment to healthy living.

Learn about one schools wellness program in this week's steps to a healthier new york.

"A healthier staff is a harder working staff."

That's the idea behind the wellness program here at Homer Brink Elementary.

Teachers and staff are encouraged to walk everyday.

There's a route inside the school and another one outdoors.

Both are a mile long.

"Walking is a lifetime activity. It's free. Its cheap, it's easy its non-discriminatory. Everyone can do it, anytime, any place, 12 months out of the year," says Physical Education Teacher Andrew Krise.

And continuous walking has the most benefit to you're heath.

That's why the school decided to extend the Steps to a Healthier New York program that the kids did last year... To the faculty and staff this year.

Even the principal is getting in on the walking action.

"I think as principal of the building that it's important that I model what we believe that other people should be doing too," says principal Darlene Darrow.

For every 5 miles, the staff gets a little reward.

They can walk on their lunch break, before or after school.

Anytime they get a chance.

And the initiative is turning into a competition.

"We're trying to open it up to everyone, all faculty and staff in the district. So we might get some friendly wagers going between the buildings," says assistant principal William Dundon.

And the wellness program isn't ending here.

In January the staff can join the Mission Melt-away program that encourages teamwork to help lose weight.
