Fruit Of The Broome Teaching Nutrition

Fruit Of The Broome Teaching Nutrition

By Jessica Light

You've probably seen the Fruit of the Loom commercials.... With those oversized grape and apple costumes.

Well some 2nd graders at one local school had a visit by some people with similar fashion sense... But they're teaching nutrition.

That's this week's Steps to a Healthier New York.

These are the Fruit of the Broome.

People from the Broome County Health Department... Dressed up as fruits and veggies here at Benjamin Franklin Elementary School.

It's a way to spread the Steps to A Healthier New York's Give Me 5 program.

"Today we're just in the schools reinforcing that message to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables and also to eat all the, a variety of food across the pyramid," says health student teacher Becky Gelunas.

And after a quick story, these 2nd graders know the difference between fruits and veggies....

"Healthy foods you need to eat to help your body get strong," says 2nd grader Tyjeria McBean.

And those yummy sweets that should just be a special treat.

"Because it's not as health for your body as the other vegetables," says 2nd grader Mitchell Otis.

Then its color time... These cut outs shaped like bananas, corn and strawberries each have a fun fact to share with the class.

Teaching the students how to make the proper food choices is just one way this school fights childhood obesity.

"We try to make sure they get out and they're active and the lunches they bring and treats they have in school are healthy and nutritious," says principal Noreen Dolan.

A jump start on healthy living... With a little bit of fun to boot.

"The kids love seeing the costume they love dancing around. It makes them excited about what they're learning and it reinforces those positive healthy behaviors," says Gelunas.
