Broome Urban League Gets Healthier

By Jessica Light

The Broome County Urban League is expanding its healthy initiatives.

Teaching both children and their families the importance of healthy living.

It's this weeks Steps to A Healthier New York

The Broome County Urban League already has a few Healthy Initiatives in place.

Like an after school program for children 5 to 11 years old.

These kids get some physical activity and learn about nutrition too.

"We talk to them about what is a healthy snack, What is healthy eating, what is the importance of healthy eating," says Lesko.

But these healthy initiatives are expanding.

While exercising at a young age is important theres more to this program....

"We're going to be having healthy cooking classes healthy nutrition workshops for the entire family so we're going to get the parents involved," says Lesko.

And that's something the Urban League board members say will help serve more people.

"It's important to me that we have programs that reach back into the community and change behavior and that's what's important about this intiative, not only does it service the needs everyday of the kids that are in the program but it takes the extra steps to move forward and then teach the parents at how they can change behavior at home at the grassroots," says Damien Cornwell of the Broome County Urban League.

It's all in an effort to make sure these kids, and their families learn how o eat right and how to stay active.

Learning those lessons now, and carrying them throughout a lifetime.
