Stepping To A Healthier Lifestyle

Stepping To A Healthier Lifestyle

By Jessica Light

Are you bored with your everyday exercise routine?

Well some kids in our area have stepped up their physical activity.

It's this week's Steps to a Healthier New York.

Forget about walking your way into a healthy lifestyle.

These kids are stomping their way.

And making friends doing it.

Meet the Unexpected Step Team.

"There's a lot of cardio there's a lot of aerobic exercise behind it and they do 20 minute routines. So they're stomping, clapping and paying attention for 20 minutes and they do a wonderful job at it," says coach Nathaalie Maxwell.

Maxwell founded the team.

She says its more than just a fun physical activity for these 8 to 17 year olds.

"Its also an academic and mental program so it promotes social activity as well as academic and scholastic activity,' says Maxwell.

The kids have to maintain a GPA of 80 or higher.

And if they slip below that line... They need to get a tutor.

Brianna Petrisko says stepping is unlike anything she's ever done before.

She's made some great friends and burned calories doing it!

"We get sweaty and tired all the time and its glam, its looks glamerous on stage but like at practice its.. Phew," says Petrisko.

A workout that is well worth the prize at the end of the road.

These kids are preparing for a competition coming up in March.

Which means they are not only stomping their way to good health.

They're stomping a path for success at the same time.
