A New Lesson In Gym Class

By Jessica Light

Gym class is a chance for kids to release all their energy and exercise at the same time.

But many gym teachers in Broome County are learning how to teach a different lesson.

It's this weeks Steps to a Healthier New York.

Mind and Body.

Finding balance within.

Yoga can be a great way to balance your body and increase physical activity.

"i'm just excited to be able to take it back to the kids so they can just see different levels and different techniques and just so they can see what else is out there," says Matt Poyne of Whitney Point School District.

These Phys. Ed. teachers have come to the Broome County Heath Department to learn some basic yoga techniques.

It's all part of the Steps to a Healthier New York program in an effort to increase physical activity in children.

These teachers will take what they learn and work it into their gym classes.

"There are so many activities the kids are involved in and a lot of it is running around and very cardiovascular in nature. This is something that calms them and soothes them and helps to relax them for all the testing they have," says Adana Braver of Calvin Coolidge Elementary.

The motto of yoga: finding positive energy within yourself.

And these teachers think this physical activity can help kids of all ages become more aware of their bodies.

"Flexibility and strength is usually, are usually areas that aren't as focused on and teachers don't know how to focus on that. So I think this is a good opportunity to bring those areas of strength and flexibility to the students," says Kerri Bullock of Broome Tioga BOCES.

These poses also massage your inner organs, improve your posture and help you balance your body and your mind.
