Learning in Motion- Steps to a Healthier NY

By Jessica Light

The steps to a healthier New york program wants to improve the health of your family.

Its no secret that teaching children proper eating and exercising techniques at a younger age will push them to live a healthy life as they age.

And that's the reason for the learning in motion program, these teachers aren't just running across the room for fun.

While this activity is entertaining... Its also educational.

"we're teaching teachers how to incorporate movement into their lessons, into their classrooms and with them being able to do this they're really going to see an improvement in the learning and academic achievement in their students, and also get them up and moving." says Kerri Bullock from Broome-Tioga BOCES.

Broome- Tioga BOCES sent 18 teachers to this learning in motion seminar.

Its an effort to reduce childhood obesity, leading to the onset of diabetes or other serious diseases.

Plus ...physical activity pumps oxygen-rich blood into the brain.

Making it easier to stay alert and understand information.

Rebecca Galunus from the Steps program says "There's a lot of research out there that shows that though physical activity and good nutrition kids are becoming better learners."

The teachers are putting this idea into motion, literally.

In this activity, they have to identify all the parts of the brain.

While this simple lesson can be taught at the blackboard or at the desk, incorporating a relay race activity gets the kids moving and makes it fun too.

Bullock says "they get excited about the movement. They get excited about the games and the competition to help them learn the different concepts instead of just sitting there listening to a teacher talk about the concepts."

And while the winner of the competition may get a prize, everyone's learning, and burning calories at the same time.

For this week's steps to a healthier NY, I'm Jessica Light.
