Fertility and Asthma

Story Updated: Dec 7, 2012

Children born after infertility treatments are more likely to suffer from asthma.

That's the conclusion of a new study, just published in

the journal Human Reproduction.

Using data from a large study of more than 18-thousand children born in the UK between 2000 and 2002, researchers were able to track data on conception and asthma diagnosis.

1-hundred-4 babies who were born through assisted reproduction were diagnosed asthmatics at age 5...which included everything from wheezing to taking medications on a regular basis. That's 24-percent. In comparison, the prevalence of asthma overall in the study population was 15-percent of children at age 5.

The researchers say there could be a number of possible explanations for the association between infertility and asthma. These include the severity of the infertility; infertility treatment or perhaps even over-reporting of asthma symptoms.

The next step is to determine why this group may be more apt to have asthma.
