Diabetes Danger

Story Updated: Jan 28, 2013

When you're diabetic, your blood sugar levels are too high. Over time, that can damage your kidneys, leaving them unable to rid your blood of toxins like they're supposed to.

Now new research suggests that once kidney disease develops in diabetics, the risk of dying increases significantly. The study, just published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, is huge news....since one in every 10 Americans has diabetes...and a third or more may develop kidney disease because of it.

Researchers at the University of Washington examined 10-year mortality rates in more than 15-thousand American adults. Kidney disease was found in more than 42-percent of those with Type 2 diabetes versus just 9-and-a half percent of those without the condition.

And when the numbers were reviewed even closer, patients with both diabetes and kidney disease faced a 31-percent risk of premature death.

The higher mortality rate linked to diabetic kidney disease surprised the researchers.... who say increased effort needs to be placed on helping patients keep their diabetes in check.

Experts say controlling your blood sugar and blood pressure, taking your medicines and not eating too much protein can help.

I'm Dr. Cindy Haines of HealthDay TV with the news that can help keep your family healthy.
