The Psychological Effects of Stroke

Tools

Story Updated: Jun 21, 2013

When a person has a stroke, there are often life changing physical effects. Now, new research suggests the trauma lingers, too.

In fact, one in four people who survive a life-threatening stroke suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder...similar to those who survive combat.

The study, led by a team at Columbia University Medical Center, looked at data from more than 11-hundred stroke survivors.

23 percent developed PTSD symptoms within the first year after their attack. 11 percent still had symptoms more than a year later.

Stroke is the fourth-leading cause of death and the top cause of disability in the United States.

The researchers say there are good treatments for PTSD- and are calling on physicians to keep an eye out for any traumatic fallout including depression, anxiety, nightmares and high blood pressure.
