Tumbling Televisions

Story Updated: Jul 23, 2013

An important warning for parents today... That TV in your family room may be dangerous to your kids but not in the way you think!

A new study finds falling televisions injure thousands of children each year.

Researchers tracked national Emergency Room data from 1990 to 2011 and identified nearly 400,000 TV-related injuries in patients under 18. That's an average of 17,313 children treated each year.

From the start of the study to the end, injuries from falling TVs jumped more than 125%.... the majority of the young patients were under 5 and most were boys.

Over 64-percent of those injured were under 5. Nearly 61-percent were boys.

Nearly half of the injuries happened when a TV fell off a high dresser or armoire. Nearly a third happened when the TV toppled from an entertainment center or TV stand.

So what's a parent to do? Make sure the TV is anchored to the wall or stand. And always use any anti-tip devices provided by the manufacturer when you set up your screen.

The researchers are also calling on manufacturers to redesign the next generation of TV's with stability in mind.

I'm Dr. Cindy Haines of HealthDay TV with the news that can keep you and your loved ones safe, healthy, and happy.
