Brain Changes

Story Updated: Nov 16, 2012

Did you know migraine affects up to 15 percent of the general population?

Now a new study, just published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, finds women who get migraines are more prone to having a certain type of brain lesion.

The good news?

ÒThere was no association between having these lesions and whether or not somebody could function cognitively which means performance on tests of memory, speed of processing and concentration.

Researchers included hundreds of patients who underwent MRI in the year 2000 in order to check for brain lesions. Some were migraine sufferers, others were part of a control group.

They administered follow-up scans to 286 of the patients in 2009.

The results- Of the 145 women in the migraine group, 112 of them-or 77 percent- had progression of the deep white matter lesions. That's compared to 60% in the control group..

The same link was not made in male migraine participants.

Interestingly, the number of migraines, frequency, and severity of the headaches were not liked to the progression of lesions.

Experts say this is not cause for alarm, but should be discussed with your doctor.
